A project that involved the filling of bottles in the UK from bulk imported wine rather than being bottled at source meant that 24,000t more recycled glass being used. This was because the UK bottles were designed to be thinner and lighter. The project, called GlassRite was carried out under the direction of WRAP and ran from summer 2006 to spring 2008. Some 199m bottles (75cl) were produced and 11,400t of glass were saved. A second phase of the project will run to November 2009 to  encourage this initiative.
